Celebrating Independence Day, well-known artist and sculptor Sh Naresh Kumar Kumawat recalls the evolution of the country through the national icons created by him. Kumawat, who comes from a family of craftsmen, has been creating idols of leaders of modern India using metals, stones and bronze for many years. His work comprises important public installations that immortalise the contribution and legacy of the nation’s leaders from central to international levels.



His work takes centre stage in the new Parliament building, where his 25-foot metal medallions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar are permanently installed in the central foyer. Together, the heavy bronze installations weigh over 6 tonnes, serving as a daily reflection on unity and social justice inside India's home of democracy.



Universally known, the sculptures of Mahatma Gandhi created by the artist are prominently featured around the globe, such as the life-size bronze statues placed at various international locations, including the Indian Embassy in Oman and at various locations in a city as important as New York. In parallel to this, he has created many large-scale tribute sculptures of the Iron Man of India, namely, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, similar to the statue sculpted for the newly set up Parliament building. Apart from this central Parliament project, the artist Kumawat has brought many installations to honour Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the man behind the Indian Constitution, such as the famous 125-foot Statue of Social Justice in Vijayawada and the well-known Ambedkar statue located at the Supreme Court of India.



While sending his wishes to everyone on the occasion of Independence Day, Naresh Kumar Kumawat says, "Sculpting our freedom fighters and our national heroes is not merely art but also a sacred conversation with our history. Let us mark long-lasting, indelible monuments on this Independence Day for the benefit of future generations that remind us of the immense efforts and stupendous achievements that build up our modern republic.”



Kumawat Ji is continuing to promote cultural diplomacy through his high-tech studio based in Manesar, Haryana. He has made art installations in over 80 countries, making him one of the most successful modern ambassadors of Indian art around the globe. Taking this international journey forward, he is currently working on a new installation of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Seattle, which is being undertaken with the support of the Indian diaspora. The unveiling of this significant installation is expected to take place soon, further extending the presence of India’s values and national icons on the global stage.
