Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE technique is a prominent hair transplant procedure that is used as a permanent solution for hair loss. Recently, Dr. Kinanr Kapadia, a famous hair transplant surgeon of the Avenues clinic, informed about a crucial decision of The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) regarding the terminology used for the Follicular Unit Extraction technique.

Dr. Kinnar Kapadia said that ISHRS have decided to make a change in the term ‘Extraction’ and this organization has suggested a new term ‘Excision’. Therefore, Follicular Unit Extraction is now Follicular Unit Excision according to the recent decision made by ISHRS.



According to ISHRS, the reason for this change is the surgical nature of the technique. Dr. Kapadia explains that the term ‘Extraction’ sounds nonsurgical and the term ‘Excision’ sounds more appropriate for the procedure.

Dr. Kinnar Kapadia said that Graft removal in the hair transplant is a surgical procedure and this process involves the excision of the hair. Therefore, the name of the surgery must define the correct nature of the procedure. FUE technique is a safe and effective procedure if it is performed by a certified and well-trained surgeon. Therefore, a wrong terminology may lead to wrong assumptions about the technique.

He added that the term ‘Extraction’ implicated that FUE technique is not a surgical procedure and it is performed with no use of any surgical process. Unauthentic clinics may use the term to perform the surgery without any license and certificate. Therefore, due to this term unlicensed and uncertified persons may perform hair transplant illegally. As a result, there is a huge risk of infections, side effects, and even deaths.
