‘Unilab’, the mechanical testing lab of Lovely Professional University (LPU) has been accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). This makes LPU the only private university in the country to bag the prestigious accreditation. It also becomes the first university in Punjab to receive the NABL accreditation.



Established under the School of Civil Engineering, “Unilab” performs mechanical testing of building and construction materials, like concrete, soil, bitumen, aggregate, bricks and paver blocks. The lab is used by both faculty and students for their research and project work. With NABL certification, LPU can now accept commercial projects and extend commercial services to the industry.



Pratham Mittal, Head of new initiatives at Lovely Professional University said, “We are excited to be the first private university in India to receive the NABL accreditation for our mechanical Unilab. The delivery of world class education requires access to high quality infrastructure, whether it is our labs, learning resources or sports facilities. With this accreditation, LPU faculty and students can now accept commercial research and testing assignments, enabling them to gain useful industry experience. It will also help us in building a closer industry-academia relationship for the school of Civil Engineering”.



Lovely Professional University’s Unilab has been established as per ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 (international standard) guidelines in 2017. The lab strictly follows the correct technical and managerial processes to ensure world class testing services are provided to its customers with consistent, reliable and accurate test results. The NABL accreditation certifies that the equipment used in the Unilab are calibrated and they have measurement traceability. The test procedures are established and followed as per relevant Indian standard code of practice and that there is a management system for handling risk, customer complaints and feedback for improvements.



Dr. Amit Srivastava, Professor at School of Civil Engineering, Lovely Professional University said, “While most educational institutions run their lab on non-commercial basis i.e.- only to teach students about testing procedures, at Unilab, the students now can get exposure to actual commercial projects. With NABL accreditation, they have a higher chance of becoming an independent NABL assessor and can work as Quality Head/Technical head in commercial labs or even start their own business in the field of testing”.



The School of Civil Engineering at Lovely Professional University offers undergraduate and graduate courses in Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering. The school also provides courses on laboratory management system as per ISO/IEC 17025:2017 to help students become an entrepreneur in the field of laboratory testing (students can start their own laboratories).
