While winters have an adverse effect on our overall health, but with addition to the increasing pollution has doubled the chances of common flu and other respiratory related ailments.

High amounts of particulate matter mixed with the smog, not only deplete the air quality but also triggers the condition like asthma, COPD and other respiratory ailments with temperature drops. While vehicular and industrial pollution remains one of the prime factors contributing to the low air quality index, smoke from stubble burning in the western UP has also tripled up the health complications. However, self-care and precautions can help in preventing various health related ailments that can cause severe future complications.

Hydration is known to be the best defense system for our body. Common flu and other viral respiratory infections lead to severe loss of immunity, although temporarily, but that short span of few days of low immunity make you vulnerable for serious secondary infections, especially in extremes of age group. Increasing the intake of antioxidants can also help defend against deadly microorganisms. Take plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables daily, preferably raw.” Said Dr Ashish Jain, Senior Consultant, Pulmonology, Max Super Speciality Hospital Saket

The aged, young kids and pregnant females are more at risk and need to take more care during these times of year. Similarly, those suffering from Heart diseases, Kidney diseases, COPD, Asthma, Diabetes etc. or who are on immunosuppression or steroids for any reasons are particularly at risk. Those who fall in this category need to be more vigilant. Ask your physician if you need an Influenza or Pneumonia vaccination. These vaccines are known to decrease the chances of infections. If possible avoid outdoor activities, or preferably wear N95 masks while going outside.

Moreover, there are various avoidable factors that add to the indoor pollution are kitchen fumes, perfumes, paints, animal dander, mosquito coil / agarbatti fumes, cigarette smoke etc. There are objects that attract and accumulate the dust and other particulate matters like carpet, rugs, upholstery, furniture, curtains etc.

“To minimize the indoor air pollution, avoid burning coils / agarbatti and use of room spray or insecticide spray. While air purifiers are one of the best options to turn upon for, especially if small kids and elderly parents at home. HEPA filter based air purifiers are better than the others as they do not emit ozone.” Added Dr Jain
