Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has announced government’s "Swachh Campus rankings" under different 8 categories, where LPU has been declared among top-ten private universities (residential) of the country. In this regard, Union Minister Javadekar handed over the award to LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal in New Delhi. In fact, best 51 higher education institutions are selected for ‘Swachhata Ranking awards’ in 8 different categories. In this regard, online submission of details was sought from participating institutions; 6029 institutions had applied, and only 205 institutions got shortlisted. Inspection teams from AICTE & UGC inspected all 205 institutions. From Punjab state, only LPU is ranked among top private universities’ Swachhta Ranking and GNDU Amritsar among public universities.

Leading the country towards cleanliness all around, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made a call to all higher educational institutions to participate in ‘Swachh Campus’ Ranking. Under different categories, campuses were judged on parameters including “toilets adequacy & maintenance; garbage clearance systems; hostel kitchen hygiene & sophistication of equipment; water purity, storage, distribution facility; campus greenery & rain water harvesting; use of solar systems; and, village or neighbourhood adoption for hygiene.”

Government teams inspected thousands of institutions throughout the country by making personal visits & keen observations and finalized the ranking in accordance. Among the category of residential campuses of universities, Symbiosis International University (Maharashtra) has been ranked at the top followed by LPU, which is the only private university from Punjab, along with 8 other universities- 2 each from Karnataka & Andhra Pradesh, and one each from Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan. Inspection teams were satisfied to find treatment plant for liquid waste; bio-gas plant for solid waste; 1000 KW solar plant for energy saving; neat and clean hostel-mess equipped with automatic ‘roti-makers’; and, moreover, maximum green part of the campus also played pivotal role in earning this ranking.

Expressing his happiness on the prestigious ranking gained by the university, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal congratulated all students and staff-members, particularly those at the helm of affairs at LPU Division of Residential Services & Facilities. Mr Mittal shares: “I personally feel that Indian government’s mission “Swachhata Hi Seva” is not only advantageous to the men-women of the country but also for the entire humanity globe over. I am also pleased to say that this coveted honour got on the eve of 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation means much to us, as Mahatma Gandhi Ji was the greatest proponent of cleanliness all around.” Mr Mittal further invoked all at LPU to carry on imbibing this spirit with great zeal and enthusiasm.”

Mr Mittal also reminded all that this ranking to LPU is yet another ranking from MHRD, Government of India, in quick succession. Only a few months back, MHRD considered Mittal School of Business at LPU as one among two best institutions of the country for ‘Out-Reach & Inclusivity’, even beating all IIMs- including IIM Ahmadabad and IIM Bangalore.
